I was trying to restore a file from my backup external drive, when I encountered and error from NTBackup: “The backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used.”
I was quite worried that I wouldn’t be able to recover anything from my rather large .bkf file. That is, until I found this little utility…

Im trying to use this tool to restore a broken BKF file at the moment however I am having trouble trying to extract the files whilst keeping the folder structure. If i just use -x it will dump all the files into 1 folder, i’ve tried using -p and -l but the program sits there and doesn’t actually extract anything.
The only problem I can think of it that we backed up a UNC path instead of a physical drive. Do you have any ideas to getting this to work?
Well, as stated in the article, I used a physical external drive for my backup.
However, you did put the (path) in when using the l and p switches, right?
You should be able to do a “ntbkup (backupfilename.bkf) -l c:\restored” or something to that effect.
I haven’t used this utility since the post date, so I’m a little rusty, but I don’t think that backing up using UNC paths should matter. I think it just doesn’t know where to put the files…
Anyway, if that’s not the case, you might want to contact the author of the program, although he says he’ll charge a minimum of $50 /per hour for support.
